Thousands Protest Prop 8 Ruling
The reaction to the California Supreme Court’s decision on Tuesday to uphold the state’s controversial Proposition 8 ban of same-sex marriage was swift and very loud. While proponents of the November proposition applauded the court’s 6-1 vote upholding the ban, thousands of opponents took to the streets of West Hollywood on Tuesday afternoon to express their displeasure with the decision. “It doesn’t mean much — we have to start over, we have to start back with our grass-root campaigns and get the word out,” Richard Chandler said, marching down San Vicente Boulevard in Los Angeles with fellow protesters, including his husband, whom he married on October 7 in San Francisco, just weeks before Prop 8 was passed. “More importantly, we need to make sure that everyone that votes knows someone that’s a gay or lesbian — we found out that 75 percent of people who do know someone who is gay or lesbian end up supporting gay marriage.”
