Thailand Considers Transgender Title Change
Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly will consider a bill tomorrow that seeks to correct one of the problems faced by the country’s transgender community.
If approved, the legislation would allow transgender women to adopt the title “Miss” and transgender men to use “Mr.” The seemingly minor change to official documents like passports and identity cards aims to help transgender people move more easily throughout society.
Thailand has one of the largest transgender populations in the world and is home to a growing sexual reassignment surgery industry.
The Gay Political Group of Thailand does not support the legislation, as it does not allow pre-operative transsexuals or cross-dressers to change their title. Officials say those groups will be considered later.
