Tenth Utah Community Bans Gay Discrimination

With days to go before the New Year, one more Utah community has passed ordinances that shield gay and transgender residents from housing and employment discrimination. Grand County makes ten. Earlier this year, Equality Utah, a statewide advocacy group for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, launched a “Ten in 2010″ campaign. In November 2009, Salt Lake City became the first in Utah to ban employment and housing discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, winning a landmark endorsement from the LDS Church. Nine more cities and counties have followed the capital’s lead. The communities, from Moab to Logan, are home to more than 775,000 residents — more than one in four Utahns — says Brandie Balken, executive director of Equality Utah.
