Pope Decries Portugal on Same-Sex Marriage
Just days before Portugal is expected to legalize same sex marriages, Pope Benedict XVI denounced both gay marriage and abortion at Portugal’s shrine of the Virgin Mary. He called on initiatives to respond to “insidious and dangerous threats to the common good.” Even though 90% of the population of Portugal is Catholic, the country legalized abortion in 2008 and its parliament has approved same-sex marriage, a measure President AnĂbal Cavaco Silva is expected to sign into law.
