Plans Announced for Lesbian Retirement Village in New Zealand
WAIRARAPA, NEW ZEALAND
Aggie Jakubska, 61, tells the New Zealand Herald she would like to use her scenic rural property to create a retirement community for elderly lesbians. She and six other women currently live on the land and say they got the idea after holding a few successful lesbian-only summer camps.
“The summer camp is a small stepping stone towards something much greater – a lesbian elders village complete with on-site nursing staff and support, an on-call doctor and everything that a fully equipped rest care facility offers,†said Jakubska. “I envisage something that allows lesbians to remain true to themselves without having to go back into the closet, without being forced to disappear just to get a room in a straight rest home.”
