Iowa Constitutional Gay Marriage Ban Effort Fails
Efforts to launch a constitutional amendment restricting marriage to one man and one woman fell short Tuesday at the Iowa statehouse, likely putting the issue to rest this year. House Republicans presented a procedural motion to move a bill out of committee and send it to the floor for a vote. House Joint Resolution 6 would begin the process to amend the Iowa Constitution to restrict marriage to heterosexual couples, in an effort to reverse an Iowa Supreme Court ruling last year that struck down the state’s ban on gay marriage. The motion failed 54-45, and the bill likely won’t make a Friday deadline to be approved by committee.
