Robert Julian’s memoir, “Postcards from Palm Springs,” paints a “ludicrous” image of Palm Springs’ gay community, say some residents of the California town.

The book came in for criticism from people who felt it created an unrealistic and lewd representation of the city, which has a gay adult population of about 40,000 and was named the “gayest city in America” by many locals, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Some residents reportedly feel the book depicts an image of overly-sexual gay men with Peter Pan complexes.

“For the love of God, the whole thing is just ludicrous. You don’t come out here because it’s going to be a carnival. It’s just a nice place to live,” a resident said.

Julian believes some people may be reacting negatively because they simply do not like to discuss the subject matter, the Times reported.

“The job of a writer is to tell the truth. And I did,” he said.
