Richard Nixon Had Gay Affair, ‘Nixon’s Darkest Secrets’ Claims

Watergate was only one of several scandalous aspects of former President Richard Nixon’s life, according to a new book by a former White House correspondent. Nixon’s Darkest Secrets: The Inside Story of America’s Most Troubled President by Don Fulsom (Thomas Dunne Books, $25.99), former correspondent for United Press International, makes several eye-catching accusations, including that the former president had a gay affair with Charles “Bebe” Rebozo, a banker apparently with ties to the mob. The allegation is especially noteworthy because, as gay news website Queerty reports, Nixon was known to have made homophobic remarks.

Former Ron Paul Staffer Claims Candidate is ‘Uncomfortable’ with Gay People

A former Ron Paul staffer says the Republican presidential candidate is “unsettled by being around gays personally” and is “out of touch” with black and Hispanic voters. In a lengthy op-ed on RightWingNews.com, Eric Dondero defended the Texas congressman against charges of racism related to newsletters released in Paul’s name during the 1980s and ‘90s. “I worked with the man for 12 years, pretty consistently. I never heard a racist word expressed towards Blacks or Jews come out of his mouth. Not once,” Dondero wrote.

Houston Man Whose Case Advanced Gay Rights Dies

In the eight years since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states may not criminalize private homosexual conduct, courts and legislatures across the country have struggled to define gay rights. The debate changed for both sides after a watershed 2003 Supreme Court ruling in a case that originated in Houston. The court voted 6-3 to guarantee privacy rights for gay men and lesbians – reversing a 1986 decision that permitted states to outlaw homosexual acts, even in homes. The Houston man at the center of the groundbreaking decision died last month of a heart condition. John Geddes Lawrence was 68.

Gay Marriage Repeal a Top Issue in New Hampshire

Repealing New Hampshire’s gay marriage law, legalizing casinos and changing the constitution to bar an income tax are among the hottest topics facing the Legislature heading into 2012, but lawmakers might not vote on these issues until after the Jan. 10 presidential primary. House Republican Leader D.J. Bettencourt says the House most likely won’t cast its votes until Jan. 11 or Jan 18. Parent Questions TN School’s Anti-Gay Policy

At least one Rossville, TN, parent is questioning school policy after her child’s school sent an updated note defining its position on homosexuality. “My initial reaction is that it was specifically aimed at one person, and I felt very sad about that,” said the parent, who did not want to be identified.
