New Poll Shows Generation Gap Over NY Gay Marriage

Americans are sharply divided over New York’s recent legalization of gay marriage, according to a new poll on Friday that revealed a huge generation gap in how same sex nuptials are viewed. The Washington Post-ABC News national survey found that voters are divided 50-46 on whether the new law is a positive or negative development. Among those under 30, supporters outnumber those who view the law unfavorably by a 2-1 margin. But among seniors, 6 in 10 say the law is bad news.

Texas Governor Perry Snared by Gay Marriage Issue

Earlier this week I reported on the provocative move by Texas Gov. Rick Perry to apply his fondness for the 10th Amendment to gay marriage. He said last week: “Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That’s New York, and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me. That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business.”

California Gay Marriage Ban Case to be Heard Sept. 6

California’s highest court says it will hear arguments right after Labor Day on an issue that is likely to prove decisive for the fate of the state’s voter-enacted ban on same-sex marriages. The California Supreme Court scheduled a Sept. 6 hearing to consider whether ballot initiative sponsors have authority to fight court rulings on their measures if the governor and attorney general refuse to appeal.

NYC Woman Sues Sizzler Over Alleged Homophobic Attack by Manager

A major gay rights group says in a lawsuit against a Queens Sizzler steak house that a manager spewed homophobic epithets at a customer and shoved her to the ground. Lambda Legal charges in the suit that the frightening encounter ensued after the manager accused Liza Friedlander of not paying for the buffet during brunch with friends at the Forest Hills Sizzler last September. The suit, filed in Queens Supreme Court, says the manager shoved Friedlander in the chest and kicked her in the legs while calling her a “f…… dyke” and other epithets.

Gay Pride Returns to Jerusalem

Israel’s LGBT community will march Thursday in Jerusalem’s annual Gay Pride Parade, an event that in past years has sparked great tension and violent clashes in the city. This year’s march takes place in a show of solidarity between Israel’s movement for LGBT rights and the wider social struggles currently sweeping the nation, principally the housing protests.

Houston Officials Work to Reverse Parole in ‘91 Gay Murder

Sometime in October, Jon Buice is set to walk out of a West Texas prison a free man, clear of his debt to the state for killing gay Houston banker Paul Broussard in 1991. But a growing contingent of local elected officials is working behind the scenes to make sure Buice doesn’t taste freedom quite yet. Buice (pronounced “Bice”) is serving 45 years in prison for his part in Broussard’s murder, which stunned this city two decades ago. Commissioners in the Amarillo office of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles voted 2-0 on July 1 to approve Buice’s parole.

HHS Moves to Revisit Gay Blood Donor Ban

The Obama administration says it will review the decades-old policy that prohibits men who have sex with men—known as MSM—from donating blood. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will conduct an “evidence-based evaluation” of the ban, which was enacted in 1985 to reduce the risk of HIV transmission in the nation’s blood supply. HHS says it needs to study four specific areas before considering a policy change, which include: comparing the risk of contamination in the current donor population to that of the prospective donor pool; determining the root cause of “accidental release” of blood not cleared for use; making sure potential donors understand the current setup, while also getting MSM to comply with modified criteria for donating; AND FINALLY creating alternative strategies to screen MSM that would assure blood safety and accurate data collection.

Opponents of California Gay History Law Seek Referendum

California’s first-in-the-nation law that requires including the contributions of gays and lesbians in social studies lessons already has drawn a challenge. The secretary of state’s office on Tuesday cleared opponents to begin collecting signatures for a possible ballot referendum seeking to overturn the law. Gov. Jerry Brown signed SB48 earlier this month, making California the first state to mandate teaching of gays and lesbians in public school curriculum. The requirement takes effect in the 2013-14 school year.

Colombian Court Says Congress Must Decide on Gay Marriage

The issue of marriage for same-sex couples is a legislative matter that must be taken up in Colombia’s Congress, the nation’s Constitutional Court ruled in a move that activists saw as a victory, though the outcome remains to be seen. The court did rule on Tuesday that gay couples in de facto unions constitute a family. Gay-rights supporters celebrated the ruling in the streets. The court gave the Congress two years to legislate the status of same-sex marriages. If the deadline passes with no legislation, then same-sex couples will be able to formalize their unions before a notary public, the court said.
