Janis Fullilove, a councilwoman in Memphis, Tenn., received death threats Tuesday over her support of protection for gays working in city government. Fullilove said that she received four threatening calls that referred to her support over the non-discrimination ordinance and also found a dead cat on her lawn. Police have said the calls, which Fullilove said had threatened to kill her, were serious enough in nature for them to place officers on patrol by her house for protection.

No commentsCBS Adding More Gay Characters to Its Shows
CBS will introduce more gay characters on its scripted programs in response to recently receiving a failing grade from GLAAD, CBS President Nina Tassler said Wednesday. “I’m very disappointed in our track record so far,” Tassler said at the Telvision Critics Association fall previews. “We know and we will do better.” Tassler said The Good Wife will introduce the gay brother of Julianna Margulies’ Alicia in the new season. She also added that there would be a recurring gay character on S#*! My Dad Says and that Jeff and Audrey (Patrick Warburton and Megyn Price) will choose a lesbian surrogate on Rules of Engagement.

An architect and a retired office worker are the first couple to wed under Argentina’s historic law legalizing same-sex marriage. Jose Luis Navarro and Miguel Angel Calefato said “I do” Friday morning in the city of Frias, Santiago del Estero Province, shortly after the law took effect. They have been partners for 27 years. Another pair wed a few hours later in Buenos Aires, and at least three more couples are scheduled to marry over the weekend.

No commentsAmerican Rabbis Call for Gay Acceptance
A group of prominent American rabbis have called for more acceptance of gays and lesbians in the Orthodox community. The “statement of principles”, signed by over 80 community leaders, affirms the rights of Jews of all sexual orientations to “be welcomed as full members of the synagogue and school community… and treated under the same halachic framework as any other member of the synagogue they join”. Six months in the making, the document – written by rabbis Nathaniel Helfgot of New York’s Yeshivat Chovevei Torah; Aryeh Klapper, dean of The Centre for Modern Torah Leadership in Boston; and Yitzchak Blau, an American-educated kollel head in Israel – states that harassing or demeaning gay Jews is “a violation of Torah prohibitions”.

Lawyers for a national religious liberty group said they plan to appeal a federal judge’s decision to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a former Eastern Michigan University graduate student who said she was kicked out of a master’s program because she refused on religious grounds to counsel a homosexual client. “There are aspects of the decision that present appealable issues and we disagree with the court on his conclusions,” David French, a lawyer for Alliance Defense Fund said today. EMU said it was pleased.

No commentsJerusalem Hosts Subdued Gay Pride March
Thousands of Israelis marched calmly Thursday in Jerusalem’s longest gay pride parade despite opposition from anti-gay demonstrators. The subdued Jerusalem march from the center of town to the parliament building contrasted with flamboyant gay pride parades elsewhere in the world. Organizers said they were adjusting to the religious character of the city and using their march to promote their political agenda. Carrying rainbow banners, several thousand demonstrators walked along the 1.5 mile (2.5 kilometer) route. A few dozen black-suited ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters at the beginning and end of the route held signs denouncing homosexuals, with slogans like “Gay Play in Hell, Not Jerusalem.” Many ultra-Orthodox Jews consider homosexuality an abomination.

1 commentHawaii Lawsuit Seeks Equal Rights for Gay Couples
Six gay couples in Hawaii are filing a lawsuit Thursday asking for the same rights as married couples, three weeks after Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed a same-sex civil unions measure. The lawsuit doesn’t seek the titles of “marriage” or “civil unions” for gay partners. Instead, it requests that the court system extend them the benefits and responsibilities of marriage based on the Hawaii Constitution’s prohibition against sex discrimination. “We continue to be discriminated against,” said plaintiff Suzanne King, who has been in a relationship with her partner for 29 years. “We’re a family unit, and we live our lives just like everyone else, but we aren’t treated the same.”

No commentsSame-Sex Relationships Increase Self-Esteem, Decrease Homophobia in Teens
Involvement in a same-sex relationship boosted self-esteem in teen males and lowered internalized homophobia in teen females who identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual, a new University of Michigan study shows. Surprisingly for the same teens, having an opposite-sex relationship had no affect on self-esteem, depression or anxiety. Dating in adolescence is critical to developing sexual and social identities, says Jose Bauermeister, assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. It’s even more salient for gay, lesbian and bisexual youth because there is such a stigma attached to their sexual orientation.
7 commentsHRC Calls NOM’s Anti-Gay Bus Tour A Sham
The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has embarked on a 23 state Summer For Marriage bus tour, taking its traditional marriage, anti-gay message on the road to spread the word of what a big, bad threat gay marriage is to society. Unfortunately, society seems to be less than enthused given that supporters at these rallies have been, well, fairly thin on the ground, with gay rights advocates outnumbering NOM supporters 3-1 or more. But could this be just what NOM wants? Conspiracy theorists, here’s one for you. The “traditional marriage” group supports opposite-sex only marriage and vociferously opposes all forms of recognition for same-sex partners, claiming that recognizing gay marriage or partnerships diminishes the status of heterosexual marriage and threatens the foundation of American society. That’s no to marriage, no to civil unions and no to domestic partnerships.

Christian Grad Student Sues Over Gay Sensitivity Training
A Georgia student studying counseling says her university went too far in requiring her to change her Christian beliefs on homosexuality before she’s allowed to graduate. Backed by the Alliance Defense Fund, Jennifer Keeton has filed suit against Augusta State University after, she said, school officials threatened to dismiss her from its counseling program when she refused to participate in a “remediation” plan to increase her tolerance of gays and lesbians after she made it known that she believed homosexuality was a personal choice.

The Family Research Council is speaking against broadening an anti-discrimination ordinance in Holland, MI. How the organization has chosen to do so is raising alarm: A community group that is trying to make Holland more accepting of gay people planned to meet Wednesday, July 28, to decide how to respond to a full-page advertisement in the local daily newspaper that one of its leaders said included “blatant untruths” about gay people.
