While in Tampa to promote high-speed rail projects, President Obama on Thursday said he supports measures to give gay and lesbian partners the same benefits as married couples. “At the federal level, one of the things that we’re trying to do is to make sure that partnerships are recognized for purposes of benefits,” he said. He mentioned hospital visitation rights, Social Security and pension benefits.

1 commentMexico City Mayor Vows to Defend Gay Marriage Law
Mexico City’s mayor says he will defend the capital’s gay-marriage law and insists the ordinance will take effect in March despite an appeal by federal prosecutors. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard says the federal appeal on constitutional grounds is wrong. He says nothing in Mexico’s constitution prohibits same-sex marriage or adoption by gay couples. The city’s legal adviser, Leticia Bonifaz, said Thursday the first gay marriages will be performed in early May while the Supreme Court hears the case.

Mexican federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that they will try to overturn Mexico City’s gay marriage law, which allows same-sex couples to adopt children, on the grounds it violates the constitution. The Mexico City law, approved in December and due to take effect in March, is the first of its kind in Latin America. The federal Attorney General’s Office said in a statement that it believes the law “violates the principle of legality, because it strays from the constitutional principle of protecting the family.”

The network says it is reviewing an ad from ManCrunch.com, a dating site specifically for gay men. After days of deliberations on whether to run a controversial Super Bowl ad from gay dating site ManCrunch.com, CBS has not yet reached a decision. The 30-second spot shows two men excitedly watching the game, before their hands brush as they both reach into a bowl of chips. Suddenly, the two begin making out, much to the shock of a guy sitting close by.

2 commentsObama Renews Vow to Repeal Military Ban on Gays
President Barack Obama vowed to work with lawmakers “this year” to repeal the law that bans gays from serving openly in the US military. As a candidate, Obama promised to scrap the policy that requires gays to keep quiet about their sexual orientation or face expulsion but has moved cautiously since taking office a year ago. “This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are,” Obama said in his debut State of the Union address.

An estimated 66,000 gay, lesbian and bisexual people are serving in the U.S. military, roughly 2 percent of all military personnel, according to a report released Tuesday by a gay rights policy center. The figures suggest a slight increase in the number of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in the military, and they provide opponents of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy with fresh data as they lobby the Obama administration for its repeal. Gays, lesbians and bisexuals account for about 13,000 active duty service members, equal to less than 1 percent currently deployed, the report estimated. About 53,000 others serve in the National Guard and reserves, equaling about 3.4 percent.

A congressman from Utah has filed legislation that would overturn a D.C. bill allowing gay marriage. U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, a Republican, submitted his legislation Tuesday. Gay marriage is not yet legal in the district, but the D.C. City Council passed a bill in December allowing the unions in the city. Because the city is a federal district and not a state its laws must be sent to Congress before taking effect.

eHarmony Inc, which operates a website to help singles find relationships, said on Tuesday that it settled a class action lawsuit over same-sex matching. All claims against the company will be dismissed and a $2 million settlement fund will be established, eHarmony said, with $500,000 designated as a fund for claims by the class. eHarmony, based in Pasadena, California, did not admit any wrongdoing or liability by settling the case, which was filed in 2007 on behalf of a class of gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals in California who alleged they were unable to use the website to be matched with same-sex partners.
