Uganda’s Anti-Gay Bill Reintroduced in Parliament

The Ugandan parliamentarian who first introduced an anti-gay bill that carried the death penalty for some homosexual acts reintroduced the bill on Tuesday, raising concerns among rights activists who have been fighting the legislation. Parliamentarian David Bahati first introduced the bill in 2009 but it has never come before the full legislative body for a vote. Though widely supported in Uganda, the bill’s progress apparently has been slowed by an international outcry against the bill, including condemnation from President Barack Obama.

Court Rules Prop. 8 Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

A federal appeals court Tuesday struck down California’s ban on same-sex marriage, clearing the way for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on gay marriage as early as next year. The 2-1 decision by a panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found that Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that limited marriage to one man and one woman, violated the U.S. Constitution. The architects of Prop. 8 have vowed to appeal. The ruling was narrow and likely to be limited to California.

Fliers Sent Home with Students Say Gay People Can Change

A controversial group that contends homosexuality can be cured through therapy or self-determination sent fliers home to parents at Albert Einstein High School and a few other high schools in Montgomery County last week. The fliers were from Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays, and said: “According to mainstream psychological associations, there are no replicated scientific studies to support that a person can be born “gay.” No “gay gene” or gay center of the brain has been found. No medical test exists to determine if a person is homosexual. Sexual orientation is based on feelings and is a matter of self-affirmation and public declarations.”

Archbishop Sent Racist Emails After Gay Marriage Claims

Dr John Sentamu, the highest-ranking black man in the Church of England, was sent a number of offensive emails following his interview with The Daily Telegraph. His office forwarded the messages on to North Yorkshire Police, who are now investigating them as hate crimes. But it is not thought there is any threat to the safety of the 62 year-old, who on Monday attended the opening of General Synod, the Church’s governing body, as planned.

Appeals Court to Decide Fate of Prop. 8 on Tuesday

A federal appeals court is expected to rule Tuesday on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California. Regardless of how a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decides the case, its ruling is very likely to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which could decide next year whether gays and lesbians nationwide have the right to marry.

Gay Candidate Faces Tough Battle in Finland Vote

For his supporters, Pekka Haavisto’s breakthrough into Finland’s presidential runoff defies fears that tolerance is waning in Finland. The gay environmentalist who lives with an Ecuadorean immigrant faces off Sunday against a veteran conservative. But they have no illusions about Haavisto’s chances. “I like Haavisto. He’s softer and is on the side of poor, but he won’t win,” said Tiinu Wikman, 23, a cosmetologist in Helsinki.

Gay Marriage Proponents Decry Ruling on Prop 8 Trial Video

Same-sex marriage proponents expressed disappointment Thursday in an appeals court decision to keep video recordings of the historic Proposition 8 trial sealed, saying the public is being denied an opportunity to bear witness to the “baseless foundation of fear” that opponents waged during the proceedings. A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals said the tapes should not be made public because the trial judge promised the defenders of Proposition 8 that they would be used for internal court purposes only, a clear victory for opponents of same-sex marriage.

The Washington state Senate has passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, bringing the state a step closer to becoming the seventh to allow lesbian and gay couples to wed. But the threat of a ballot challenge looms. The packed public galleries burst into applause as the Senate passed the measure on a 28-21 vote Wednesday night after nearly an hour and a half of debate. Four Republicans crossed party lines and voted with majority Democrats for the measure. Three Democrats voted against it.

No, not because it sells sweater vests (heck, Rick Santorum is a fan of those), but because the Texas-based department store has hired Ellen DeGeneres as a spokeswoman. Pastor Calls for Nationwide Starbucks Boycott Over Gay Marriage

A Christian pastor is calling for a nationwide boycott of Starbucks for the company’s support of same-sex marriage in Washington. In a message published online a day before Washington’s Senate passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, Pastor Steven Andrew of USA Christian Ministries predicted that the Seattle-based coffee giant could lose 80 percent of its customers if Christians get their coffee somewhere else — a number he bases on his contention that 80 percent of Americans are Christian while just 1-to-2 percent of the population is homosexual.
