Advocates Look for Partner Benefits in Orange County
Gay rights advocates scored a victory Tuesday night as the Orange County Commission passed new protections for housing and employment. But the next issue advocates are pushing is more controversial. Gay rights proponents want domestic partner benefits for Orange County employees. “It’s the next step in the work that we need to do on the county level,” said Joe Saunders with Equality Florida. “Right now same sex couples that work for the county can’t share their benefits and that’s just wrong.” Incoming mayor Teresa Jacob has said she’s willing to talk about it but worries about added costs to the county. Orlando passed the benefits in 2008 and paid out less than $30,000 last year.
